| ATLANTA
CONFIDENTIAL Atlanta, Georgia Television Talk Show 1997 |
| Hostess:
Well actor Russell Crowe may not be well known to American audiences but
he soon will be. Russell is an Australian actor cast as one of the leading
characters in the new murder mystery, L.A. Confidential. Please welcome
Russell Crowe to Good Day Atlanta this morning.
Host: The doorbell's ringing ... where is he? Oh, it's Russell Crowe, ladies and gentlemen! RC: Oh, look at this big studio audience. Host: Good to see ya! Oh, good to see ya ... hi, have a seat. Good to see ya. Hostess: Oh, my. How are you? Thanks for joining us this morning. Oh my, isn't this nice? RC: Oh, you've got this incredible audience -- Host: Isn't it great? The audience is waving. Hostess: They came in just for you. How 'bout that? RC: How 'bout that? [laughs] Hostess: How 'bout that? How about L.A. Confidential? Tell us all about it. RC: Well, it's ahh, it comes from ahh, a James Ellroy novel. It's a very complex, convoluted story about police corruption in the 1950s. Hostess: And what about your role in all of this? RC: I play a very meat and potatoes blue-collar cop called Bud White. Hostess: Bud ... ? RC: Can't get any more Waspy, can ya? Host: Can't get as, yeah ... I know, as vanilla as that! RC: But it's got a really big cast, a big ensemble cast. It's got Kim Bassinger, who's a Georgia native. Danny DeVitto, Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, from the pig film ... remember? Host: Yeah! That's right! RC: Academy Award Nominee. Rob Rifkin, David Sheffer and another young Australian called Guy Pearce. Hostess: Oh, now we have a clip here. Host: Yeah, we're going to see you having a confrontation with a fellow ... is it a bad cop that we're going to be seeing with ... Hostess: Well, let's take a look ... Host: Yeah, let's take a look and see and you can figure it out.
of Bud White outside ambulance as rape victim is taken away] Host: Whoa ... rough and tough ... RC: Fun day that day with the director trying to get those guys to actually put some effort into pushing me back. The first time I ran, I ran right through 'em, it's like, you know ... Had to kind of build them up to it. Hostess: Yeah ... Host: We can talk a lot about this cop stuff but I just want to know ... there's a moment in the movie where you're with Kim Bassinger. What was that like, and I think you know what I'm talking about ... RC: All she talked about was you, Mate. Host: Yeah, exactly. RC: Aw, Dan ... Host: Good one! Now my favorite actor in the whole world. I mean that's ... that's neat. RC: It was a little bit of fun. Yeah, yeah. Kim's got a brilliant spacial instinct, you know ... She's got ... Host: What does that mean? RC: ... fine ... She knows what's going on around her ...
Host: Oh, oh ... Ijust want to know. I want to be on the edge, I want to be you.
Hostess: How did you enjoy, Russell, playing this particular role as opposed to others that you've played? RC: Well, you know, it's all kinda' pretend so it's all fun at the end of the day anyway but when I first read the character I didn't want to do it necessarily because I saw him as extremly immoral. He's a man who uses his badge and his authority for his own ends. But when I knida' got to know him, and I read the book as well, and I started looking into what he was doing um, you know, he uses his authority in a time period when there were no laws specifically covering domestic abuse. He's using his badge to go out on a daily basis and get domestic abuse rescinder and put them back in prison. You know? That's what he does. So, I kinda' started to see him as a very moral man because he believes absolutely in what he believes in. And he'll stand up for it, he'll fight for it, and die for it. You know, and we don't get that very often these days, you know. People in the public eye and stuff, tend to change their mind as often as they change their underwear. Host: Oh, twice a week? Oh, no, sorry ... sorry ... [laughs] RC: [couldn't make out what was said here] Hostess: Thank you so much for joining us. Good luck with the movie. Host: Good luck with the movie. RC: I'm gonna' say hi to a lady called Venita House. She works here in Atlanta. She writes me letters and sends me T-shirts and stuff. Hostess: Oh, wonderful ... RC: So, I just want to say "Hi".
Hostess: Sounds like a big fan.
Hostess: Thank you so much for being with us this morning and good luck with your movie. [Russell nods "yes"] |
